Rangers give Gladstone a challenge

Hailey Clark bangs a solo home run for the softball team

by: ESTACADA NEWS: DAVID BALL - Estacada freshman Hailey Clark is greeted at home plate after hitting a solo home run in the sixth inning of last weeks 7-2 loss at Gladstone.GLADSTONE — Estacada’s softball team had a moment of celebration late in last week’s game at Gladstone, but it wasn’t enough to pull off an upset win over the No. 5-ranked Gladiators.

Estacada catcher Hailey Clark stepped into the batter’s box in the sixth inning for what would be her final at-bat. She cracked a long ball that sailed straight for the scoreboard in center field, leaping into the air with her arms outstretched as she saw the ball clear the fence on her way to second base.

Gladstone coaches delivered the home-run ball to Clark in the handshake line after the game.

The homer would cap the scoring for the game, as Gladstone picked up its 14th straight win with a 7-2 decision. The Rangers are the only league team to put up more than one run against the Gladiators this season.

The Gladiators put the game away with a three-run spurt in the fifth before Estacada relief pitcher Elsie Gleason came to the pitcher’s circle to get the final out of the inning and retired Gladstone in order in the sixth.

Estacada finished the week with a 12-4 loss at Madras.

The Rangers host Molalla at 5 p.m. Thursday, needing a win to stay out of last place in the Tri-Valley standings. Estacada won the first meeting between the schools 14-7 two weeks ago.
