Once a year, the best graduating senior football players in the state from the 1A to 4A levels duke it out on the gridiron for one last time representing their high schools. However, this contest is more than just an all-star game.
Oregon's 65th annual East–West Shrine All-Star Football Game took place last Saturday in Baker City. The event serves as a fundraiser benefiting Portland Shriners Hospital for Children, with all the proceeds from the event donated to the Shriner's Hospital.
Estacada head coach Andy Mott served as an assistant for the West squad while former Estacada running back Doug Kirchhofer represented the Rangers on the field. While the West lost 29-23, Mott was pleased with the experience and the fun that was had for both the coaches and players.
"It was a heck of a game. There were a bunch of big plays on both sides and it was a very back and forth game...It was pretty exciting to see some of the best kids in the state come together," Mott said. "I think the kids had a really good time and quickly became friends with one another. They bonded like they had known each other for years."
