Squirrel! It's been several months since Oregon's new distracted driving law took effect. House Bill 2597
prohibits drivers from using any function on the phone
that requires holding or touching and increased the
fines for doing so.
According to ODOT, the definition of distracted
driving is when a driver "voluntarily diverts attention
to something not related to driving." Why the new law?
Distracted driving is fast becoming one of the greatest
causes for accidents and fatalities on our roadways.
In fact, some studies suggest that distracted driving may
be as dangerous as drunk driving.
On the Centers for Disease Control website it states that "each day in the United States, approximately 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver." That's per
day! Extrapolate that out for an entire year and now you
understand the seriousness of distracted driving.
A text, an email, and a phone call can wait. The accident you prevent is not only for the safety of your family but also for the families driving next to you. It's all our responsibility. Call Matthew and Natalee Stone today for tips on driving safely. Squirrel!
