Schools announce new start/end times

Start and end times will change at most schools in the Forest Grove School District this year.

The biggest adjustment will be at Tom McCall Upper Elementary School, which will move to an 8 a.m. start time and dismissal at 2:15 p.m. "That shift will allow for a more efficient bus schedule and eliminate the long wait many Tom McCall bus riders experienced after school last year," said district spokeswoman Connie Potter.

Here's the new schedule at other schools:

• Cornelius Elementary: 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. (was 9:05 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.)

• Dilley Elementary: 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. (was 9:05 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.)

• Echo Shaw Elementary: 8:40 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. (no change)

• Fern Hill Elementary: 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. (was 9:05 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.)

• Joseph Gale Elementary: 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. (no change)

• Tom McCall Upper Elementary: 8 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. (was 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.)

• Forest Grove High School: 8:35 a.m. to 3:11 p.m. (was 8:20 a.m. to 2:49 p.m.)

• Forest Grove Community School: FGCS does not follow the district's Wednesday late start. Level 1 students will dismiss at 3:05 p.m. Monday through Thursday; Levels 2, 3 and 4 students will dismiss at 3:20 p.m. Monday through Thursday. All students will dismiss at 1:05 p.m. Fridays.

Dance team seeks sponsors

The Forest Grove High School Vikettes have been invited to dance at the 2012 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl and in the Big Bay Balloon Parade in San Diego Dec. 27, and they're looking for financial assistance.

According to Donnita Cadd, communications coordinator for the FGHS dance team, and head coach Josie Fritz, team members have held several fundraisers but are short of a $35,000 goal to make their deadline.

Want to be a host family?

Pacific University alumnus Nicole Nowlin, an international student counselor and local area coordinator for the nonprofit exchange program NW Services Inc., is working to locate local families willing to host exchange students this year.

With a new school year looming, Nowlin said she's looking specifically for people with an extra bed who would consider hosting for the short term, as "welcome familes" who keep the student for the first month or two of their exchange only.

Students are available from more than 20 countries. These high school students come from all walks of life, religions and economic backgrounds, and their interests range from art and debate to Scouting and snowboarding. All are over the age of 14.
