New bike racks hitting Forest Grove

Workers with the City of Forest Grove this week began work on a trio of covered bike racks aimed at offering commuters a place to stash their bikes before they get on the Line 57 bus.

The first shelter is going up at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and College Way. Two others will follow at the B Street TriMet bus station and on 19th Avenue, across from Safeway. The city is paying for the racks with a $45,000 grant from Metro and $5,250 in city funds.

Scouts’ donation to enhance Veterans Memorial Park

Veterans Memorial Park in Cornelius is getting another boost. Amber Gilley and Zack Gallinger-Long, who’ve headed up the transformation of the former Arboretum Park as a community space honoring local veterans, say lighting fixtures are coming soon and that names will be engraved on the park’s granite wall in the next few months. On Tuesday, Sept. 18, Boy Scouts from Forest Grove Troop 213 presented a check for $295 to Gallinger-Long to sponsor one of the bronze emblems for the wall. “The troop worked hard to raise funds to sponsor a memorial plaque,” he noted, adding that Troop 213’s gift matches a donation from Forest Grove Girl Scout Troop 40260 for funding of the plaques. During the evening ceremony Tuesday, Zack Gallinger-Long, whose brother, Navy medic Ryley Gallinger-Long, died while serving in Afghanistan last year, accepted the check on behalf of the park and educated the Scouts about the park’s history.

Pacific forum to air on OPB Thursday

Forest Grove will get 60 minutes of fame this week when the nationally-syndicated radio program Philosophy Talk airs a segment recorded at Pacific University earlier this year. The discussion, “Why Be Moral?” was taped in April during the Undergraduate Philosophy Conference held on the Forest Grove campus and features guest expert James Sterba, from the University of Notre Dame. The weekly show airs on many National Public Radio stations and will be carried by Oregon Public Broadcasting (91.5 FM) this Thursday, Sept. 20 from 9 to 10 p.m. This was Philosophy Talk’s fourth visit to Forest Grove. The show stopped at Pacific twice in 2009 and once last year.

New charges filed against Forest Grove lawyer

Bob Browning, a prominent land use lawyer in Forest Grove, faced new charges of criminal mistreatment last week. The charges were filed against Browning by way of a secret indictment in Washington County Circuit Court that returned charges on 14 counts of criminal mistreatment against Browning.

The latest charges are part of a two-year investigation by the Forest Grove Police Department. In September 2011, police arrested Browning alleging that he mismanaged the money of his now-deceased mother-in-law. The latest court filings restructure the original charges with the addition of Browning’s own mother as an alleged victim in the financial mistreatment case.

In July, Browning received a 120-day suspension from the Oregon State Bar, responding to unrelated complaints against him.
