Oregonian considering Forest Grove expansion

Less than two weeks after the Pamplin Media Group launched a paper in Hillsboro, The Oregonian may be planning a new paper of its own, just down the road in Forest Grove.

Several sources who’ve been briefed on the plans say the move into Forest Grove is being pushed by Publisher N. Christian Anderson III, in response to the Sept. 7 debut of Pamplin's own Hillsboro Tribune, a twice-monthly newspaper. New Jersey-based Advance Publications, Inc. owns The Oregonian and the Hillsboro Argus, a twice-weekly. Pamplin Media Group owns the News-Times, a weekly newspaper that has published in Forest Grove since 1886. John Schrag, who has been publisher of the News-Times since 2005, is also the publisher of the Hillsboro Tribune.

Those who heard the plans say the Oregonian’s new weekly paper in Forest Grove will feature three reporters. Some positions will be filled by Oregonian staffers on one-year contracts.

In an e-mail exchange with the News-Times, Anderson did not directly comment on the news.

“If our company were ever to decide to publish a newspaper in Forest Grove, we’ll send you a press release,” Anderson wrote.

However, Anderson also implied in the email exchange that the Hillsboro Argus would continue to be Advance Publication’s main newspaper in western Washington County.

“We’re very successful serving residents and advertisers in Hillsboro and western Washington County with our twice-weekly Hillsboro Argus. It is and will continue to be the premiere information source for the area,” he said.
