District looks ahead to new strategic plan

Goals announcement to follow community meeting Oct. 15

Trying on her new title, Chief of Staff Connie Potter will lead a community meeting Oct. 15 to gather feedback for a new set of strategic objectives to lead the Forest Grove School District forward for the next five years.

The current strategic plan expires later this year.

“Once we receive all the input, we’ll do some final tweaking,” said Potter, formerly the district’s director of community relations and partnerships.

Last month, Potter's job description showed a number of revamped responsibilities: partnership development, district publications, media liaison, website content provider, district emergency plan coordinator, county Safe Schools liaison, School Based Health Center liaison, bond planning and communications, volunteer coordinator, marketing, stakeholder engagement and communications.

"It's really just a new title to better describe what I do," noted Potter, who's been with the district since 1994.

She's been busy over the last several weeks hosting various civic groups — including the Kiwanis and Lions clubs, Daybreak Rotary of Forest Grove, Forest Grove Noon Rotary and the Cornelius Boosters — at the new Joseph Gale Elementary School, answering questions and seeking members' opinions about how the district should set priorities between 2012 and 2017.

"We're hitting all the service organizations as a way of rolling things out," said Potter, who noted that school board members and the district's leadership team met over the summer in a series of "visioning sessions" that included employees of Intel who are interested in the 5,700-student district's future.

"What we're talking about is transforming learning in our district," said Potter. "It's been an exciting process already."

In the works is a document that will lay out the district's five major goals over the next five years, "as well as strategic objectives to achieve those goals," said Potter. Pieces include changes in learning approaches, such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), application-based learning and technology integration.

"It'll really be a continual monitoring and adjusting" as the landscape changes in terms of what the federal and state governments require of public school districts in order to fund their programs, said Potter.

Meanwhile, the district's building principals are also presenting information to their parent groups about ideas for the updated strategic plan, which the school board will adopt later this fall.
