In brief

Hello Leader, goodbye Courier

Last week officials at The Oregonian announced that on Oct. 17 they will be starting a free newspaper, the Forest Grove Leader. Details about the distribution of the new Forest Grove paper were sketchy. But on Tuesday, western Washington County readers of the Courier, a free mass-produced paper published by the Hillsboro Argus, were informed that they would no longer be getting that publication and instead get the Leader which promises “deeper coverage of local news and sports.” The Courier (formerly known as the Courier Mail) lost most of its display advertising in recent years. Its final edition was down to four pages.

Crash takes out MAX ticker

Light rail riders with loose schedules will be frustrated over the next few weeks as TriMet's TransitTracker software was brought down Monday when a car crashed into key equipment at the Rose Quarter Transit Center in Portland. TriMet officials expect the system to take two to three weeks to repair. Until then, MAX stations won't display real-time arrival estimates for trains, relying instead on the scheduled arrivals.
