State of two cities

Forest Grove, Cornelius accomplishments touted by Truax, Dalin

Cornelius Mayor Jef Dalin vowed to keep working toward a downtown "where people come to — not just pass through" when he addressed the city’s booster club Monday.

Among the successes of 2012, Dalin cited the first annual Take Care of Cornelius Day, which drew residents together for a city cleanup; two bilingual town meetings; increased citizen involvement in crime prevention, including another Citizens Police Academy in the works; and the first annual holiday tree lighting, with hundreds braving a downpour to celebrate.

The 2012 vote was also important for Cornelius, with the two-cents-per-gallon tax remaining in place to pay for paving and streetlights, and voters approving the merging of Cornelius and Forest Grove municipal courts.

Financially, the city is also in a good place, Dalin said, even winning awards for the budget presentations in its financial reports.

On the city's 2013 schedule, Dalin sees:

n Work on Baseline Street between 10th and 20th avenues.

n A vote on a $2 million project financing bond, which will provide the city with a new 16,000-square-foot library along with a community meeting space and affordable senior housing.

n Continued research into an aquifer storage and recovery system that would allow the city to store millions of gallons of water underground.

In Forest Grove, during his own address to the Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Pete Truax extolled improvements in housing, natural areas and transportation, emphasizing the importance of expanding the city's bus service.

"When I was a fuzzy-cheeked freshman at Pacific (University) in 1964, the route for the ancestor of Line 57 was the same as it is today, 49 years later. And this is in a community that in that same 49 years has grown from a shade over 8,000 to almost 22,000."

Truax also lauded a new housing complex for low-income farmworkers created by the nonprofit Bienestar and emphasized the importance of continuing not only "this partnership in housing construction, but more importantly, this partnership of the spirit — this sisterhood, this brotherhood."
