Forest Grove School Board to fill vacancy left by Jimenezs death

Forest Grove School Board members will choose between three applicants Thursday evening to fill the Position 2 seat left vacant by the death of board member Gil Jimenez last month.

The board will meet at 5 p.m. in the Grove Room at the district administration office, 1728 Main St., to interview candidates Jeff Cooper, Charless Waterman and Lonnie Winkler.

Cooper is the father of two children in the district and volunteers as a parent representative on the district's technology advisory panel.

Waterman is a parent volunteer and has a daughter at Neil Armstrong Middle School.

Winkler is vice president of the Fern Hill Elementary School parent club, where his child is a student. He also serves as an alternate on the district budget committee.

After making their choice, the board will swear in the new member at the same meeting and he or she will fill the remainder of Jimenez's term, which ends June 30.

If the appointee wants to continue in the seat past the end of June, he or she will need to file for and win election to the seat in the May 21 school board election.

Three positions will be on the ballot in the May special election. Incumbent John Hayes has filed for reelection to his Position 1 seat. Board chairwoman Alisa Hampton decided not to seek reelection to her Position 3 seat.
