Block grant girds Cornelius projects

Improvements to Adair Street and other downtown thoroughfares set

Improvements just keep coming in Cornelius.

City officials plan to use $172,000 in funds from a Community Development Block Grant to finish the paving project on 11th Avenue between Adair and Baseline streets. The project includes curb, gutter, sidewalk, storm drain and streetlight improvements on the west side of the avenue.

Funding will be available in July, and work on the new enhancements will start shortly thereafter.

Upgrades on 12th, 13th and 14th avenues between Adair and Baseline have already been completed. The project started a few years ago, but was put on hold during construction of the new Virginia Garcia Wellness Center.

According to Cornelius Public Works Director Mark Crowell, the project is expected to be completed in the fall.

The final product will improve both accessibility for the disabled and aesthetics, as well as complete the connection between Adair and Baseline, Crowell said.

The upcoming work on 11th Avenue will complement additional work scheduled for this summer, including new sidewalks and street parking on Baseline and new traffic signals on 14th Avenue where it intersects with Baseline and Adair.
