Candidates turn out for local races

Last-minute rush of filings makes several school board seats contested races

Forest Grove voters will see two contested school board races in the May 21 special election, while the Banks school board has one contested race. Both open school board seats in Gaston are uncontested.

A flurry of last-minute filings for the Forest Grove School Board will give voters a choice of two candidates for the Position 2 seat and three candidates for the Position 3 seat.

Newly-appointed board member Charless Waterman has filed to run for her Position 2 seat as has Forest Grove resident Erin Fivecoat. Waterman was appointed to the board just two weeks ago to fill the position left open by the death of Gil Jimenez.

Lonnie Winkler, Jeff Cooper and Sebastian Bannister Lawler will tussle for the Position 3 seat currently held by Alisa Hampton, who has decided not to seek reelection.

Winkler and Cooper also applied for appointment to the Position 2 open seat, to which Waterman was ultimately appointed. Winkler is the alternate on the district’s budget committee.

School board vice-chairman John Hayes will run unopposed for his Position 1 seat. Hayes, a retired Pacific University dean, was appointed to the board in January 2012.

In Banks, incumbents Norie Dimeo-Ediger and Will Moore will run for reelection to their seats.

Dimeo-Ediger is running unopposed for Position 1 for a second term. She said she spent her first term “getting used to the board system ... how it works. I now feel like I have my sea legs.”

Moore will face Raymond Mott for the Position 2 seat. Mott, a longtime resident of Banks, owns a cleaning business. His two grown children attended Banks schools. “I love our schools,” Mott said. “I think I can help.”

Board vice-chairman Richard Bowden did not file for reelection to his Position 4 seat. Maureen Okerstrom will run unopposed for that seat. Okerstrom is a retired teacher and has lived in Banks for eight years.

In Gaston, incumbents Karen Fordyce and Roger Mesenbrink have filed to run for reelection to their seats.
