Commencement Q&A unravels mystery of graduation

    Pacific University’s spring 2013 commencement ceremony is set for Saturday, May 18 at Lincoln Park Stadium, 2423 Main St., Forest Grove.

Students in the College of Arts & Sciences will commence at 9:30 a.m., and students in Professional Programs will commence at 1:30 p.m.

Here are the answers to some common questions about graduation:

Q: How long is commencement?

A: Commencement lasts about two hours.

Q: What is baccalaureate?

A: Baccalaureate is a pre-commencement ceremony for all graduates to celebrate themselves and this rite of passage. All graduates, family members and friends are invited: students do not wear regalia. Q: How long is baccalaureate?

A: Baccalaureate is about an hour and is followed by Sign, Shake and Ring.

Q: What is Sign, Shake and Ring?

A: Graduates are invited to join President Lesley Hallick at Old College Hall to signify leaving the university by ringing the bell and signing the Book of Remembrance, just as was done upon entering Pacific.

Q: What happens if it rains?

A: Only in extreme weather conditions will there be a change to the commencement ceremony. Rain does not constitute extreme weather. The ceremony is outdoors in Lincoln Park Stadium. There is no roof or cover. Please dress appropriately for the weather.

Q: What are the arrangements for individuals who need access to a sign language interpreter?

A: This year there will be a live video-feed with captioning available to all guests through their smartphone, tablet or laptop computer. You can access the website at pacificu.edu/tv. Q: Is there reserved seating?

A: No. All seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Gates open one hour before the ceremony begins.

Q: Is there a reception following the commencement ceremony?

A: Yes. After the ceremony, a reception is held on the Quad between Walter and McCormick residence halls.
