Come to Concours and see the (other) sights

Forest Grove has activities and amenities to spare on car show Sunday

Visitors to this year’s Concours d’Elegance car show in Forest Grove will have no shortage of things to do and places to explore when they drop in to the Pacific University campus July 21.

First of all, there are the cars — lots and lots of vintage automobiles at which to gawk and gaze. They’re the stars.

But there are several other possibilities on Concours weekend and beyond. Bursting with attractions and activities to see, do, taste and experience, Forest Grove is a treasure trove of fun. Here are just a few ideas for starters:

n Take a drive on the rural side — Discover the beauty of Oregon’s rich agricultural history by driving the Vineyard & Valley Scenic Tour Route. This sanctioned route is part of the Discover Oregon Scenic Byways program and allows for plenty of wine tasting and shopping.

n Go on a hike — Nature is nearby in Washington County, where lakes, rivers, forests and bike paths make biking and hiking a real treat. Wander down to Fernhill Wetlands to see wildlife up close and personal. Tool up to Hagg Lake and dip your toes in its clear blue waters.

n Play world-class golf courses — Watch a heron take flight on the back nine as you experience one of the many courses dotting the landscape of Washington County, where there’s both natural beauty and great golfing to be had.

And, of course, there are the people, some of whom live on century farms built by their grandparents, and others who have moved to the newer subdivisions that ring Forest Grove.

“We have all the conveniences of a modern, commercial-industrial center without the hustle and bustle of big-city life,” says Mayor Pete Truax. “There’s a community spirit here that can’t be found in larger cities. Neighbors care about each other; parents can feel comfortable about letting their children play outside and our residents take an active role in preserving the trees and greenery that make our city so beautiful.”

And while there’s never a guarantee of great weather, Concours weekend comes close. The event’s late founder, Allen Stephens, checked with local meteorologists and determined that the third weekend in July offered the best chance at a dry Sunday. So far, it’s been true — with rain falling only twice in the four decades the event has been held.
