Browning goes south

Bob Browning, a longtime and well-known Forest Grove lawyer and municipal court judge, was recently transferred to the Deer Ridge Correctional Institution, a minimum-security facility in Madras, according to his daughter, Lisa Maisel. Browning was convicted of criminal treatment in the first degree for illegally taking money out of financial accounts belonging to his mother and mother-in-law. He was sentenced to 40 months in prison June 3.

Pool sees record-setting day

The Forest Grove Aquatics Center broke a revenue record Monday, July 1, when it took in more than $6,000 from a combination of membership renewals, swim-lesson registration and a huge public-swim crowd sparked by the hot weather. The largest previous amount taken in at the center was $4,700.

Advocates for homeless offer hands-on help

Washington County Project Homeless Connect is holding its first summer event on Friday, July 12, hoping to engage more homeless families. The one-day, one-stop fair connects homeless people to support organizations and services such as on-site haircuts, food, and health and dental care. Now in its seventh year, the event is held at Sonrise Church, 6701 N.E. Campus Ct., along Cornell Road in the Orenco area of Hillsboro. Previous events have been held in winter. At last January’s gathering, about 550 people received help from 300 volunteers from more than 75 nonprofit, faith, public and private organizations.

Bridge closes briefly

The West Ford Dairy Creek bridge just north of Banks on Highway 47 will be closed for repairs from 7 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, through 6 p.m. Thursday, July 18. A detour will be set up to let drivers enter Banks via Northwest Sellers Road or Highway 6.

Smythe named dean

Pacific University’s College of Optometry dean Jennifer Smythe has been elected the first woman president of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry.

In 2010, Smythe became the first woman elected to the ASCO executive committee. Later that year, she received the Optometrist of the Year honor by the Oregon Optometric Physicians Association.

Since her residency at Pacific in 1993, she has held various roles within the College of Optometry, including professor, chief of contact lens services and associate dean for academic programs.

Dr. Smythe was in a private practice in Beaverton for 12 years.
