Owners Dorie and Bruce Horne have devoted their lives to serving the community through education and emergency services — and with handmade body products. Dorie managed Care to Share, a nonprofit that assists Beaverton and Aloha-area residents in crisis situations, for 13 years. She also continues to support the Oregon Food Bank, Washington County Thrives, and serves as a board member of Hillsboro's Love Inc.

For 16 years, Bruce taught children and supervised teams of teachers at Community Action. And Dorie’s Father, Andy Bachmann, who helps the family business by crafting stained glass art, served his country as a World War II veteran. With a long history of serving, it is no surprise that the Hornes-Bachmann family would seek other ways to help people in their community.

In 1998, the Hornes started Midnite Oils by selling soaps, candles and art. Then in 2006, after studying allergens contained in many lotions and skin products, Dorie decided to make her own body products and perfume oils without harmful chemicals and additives. The same year, Midnite Oils also started selling at the Forest Grove Farmers Market.

“Our objective is to create a quality natural product while delivering education and service to the community, one soap bar, body butter or 'Magic Muscle Relief' [lotion] at a time,” said Dorie.

Dorie recounted a humorous incident in which an unaccompanied preschooler was intrigued by their cinnamon-clove soap bar. “After sniffing the bar several times, I turned away and he decided to take a bite. I turned back to see a horrible look on his face. He spit it out and ran into the crowd. Our soap bars look and smell good enough to eat, but please don’t," she said.

Midnite Oils products are available every Wednesday at the Forest Grove Farmers Market and at other area markets and retail outlets. For more information visit midniteoils.com or call 503-516-3513.
