Speeding Mercedes barely misses police

Man, 24, charged with reckless driving after nearly hitting officers

Two law enforcement officers narrowly escaped injury — or worse — Monday when a Cornelius driver bore down on a traffic crash scene at breakneck speed and almost hit the men.

Emergency officials were responding to a one-car crash on Scotch Church Road just west of Jackson School Road around 3:30 p.m. when a black 2002 Mercedes C320 sped toward the scene, eastbound on Scotch Church Road and nearly hit a patrol car and a fire truck. A state police trooper and Washington County sheriff's deputies had to jump out of the way but were not hurt, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, spokesman for OSP.

Driver Jorge L. Araujo, 24, was arrested and charged with reckless driving, two counts of endangering another person, misdemeanor driving while suspended and failure to install an interlock ignition device.

He was taken to the Washington County Jail and his mother came to pick up the car, Hastings said.
