by: NEWS-TIMES FILE PHOTO: CHASE ALLGOOD - The annual car show at Gastons Wapato Showdown usually draws about 400 entries. The Wapato Showdown has been filling Gaston streets with vendors, cars and a parade for 16 years.

This weekend, Saturday, Aug. 23, and Sunday, Aug. 24, it’s coming back.

The annual parade will kick things off Friday night at 6:30 p.m. It’s recommended that gawkers get there before the start — and before Highway 47 closes.

Those looking to satisfy their hunger with an old-fashioned steak feed can do so from 6 to 10 Friday night.

Things will start up again bright and early Saturday with a pancake breakfast at the Gaston Fire Department, 102 E. Main St. — a fundraiser for Gaston’s volunteer firefighters — from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Food and beverage booths open at 11 a.m. Raffles and giveaways start at noon and go all day.

This year, for the first time, visitors can release their inner Wyatt Earp or Calamity Jane during a Townsfolk Alley event sponsored Saturday by members of the Portland Fast Draw Club and Dayton Gunfighters. by: NEWS-TIMES FILE PHOTO: CHASE ALLGOOD - The car show registration starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24.

Registration for the car show runs 8 a.m. to noon. Day-of registration is $15. Judging will be at 1 p.m. and the trophy will be awarded at 3:30 p.m.

The showdown is held in Brown Park on E. Main St. in Gaston.
