Forest Grove High student succumbs

Services for Shannon Strickland, 16, will be held Sunday

Shannon Strickland, who completed her sophomore year at Forest Grove High School last June, died Aug. 28 at age 16 after a three-year battle with cancer.

Her orchestra teacher for two years, Leonard Ostwalt, said Shannon “wanted to be as independent as possible,” even after her disease required her to use a wheelchair and crutches.

When Shannon, a violinist, played with the orchestra during last spring’s musical, Once Upon a Mattress, she insisted on carrying her equipment and music into the pit with her. “She was a very determined young lady who generally refused any offers of help,” Ostwalt noted.

A memorial service for Shannon is scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8 at the SGI-USA Oregon Buddhist Center in Lake Oswego. Her obituary appears on page A8.
