Forest Grove family escapes house fire

Family practices exit plan, escapes unhurt

Forest Grove Fire & Rescue arrived around 8:30 p.m. to find smoke pouring from the home’s garage and spreading up a wall and into the attic. Cornelius, Gaston, Hillsboro and Banks fire departments all responded.

Firefighters were able to extinguish all the flames after 15 minutes, preventing the blaze from spreading to the rest of the house.

The family members followed their fire escape plan — the two older children exited the house and met at a mailbox across the street while their mother gathered her two younger children from the dining room. They all escaped without injuries.

The probable origin of the fire is near a refrigerator in the garage. Damage is estimated at $40,000.

Forest Grove Fire & Rescue personnel want to stress the importance of families practicing a fire escape plan with their children. Teach children to get out of the house and stay out, and to meet at a pre-determined location. Also practice locating two ways out of the house, they say.
