Black ties and big hearts at golf club

Bret Lucich returns to gala fundraiser for another night of rock n' roll classics

Sometimes, there's no better feeling than the feeling of helping those in need. And if you're going to feel good, you might as well look good, too.

On Friday, Habitat for Humanity is presenting its annual Hearts for Habitat gala and auction, a black-tie-optional soiree featuring live music, live and silent auctions, wine, hors d'oeuvres and more. The event takes place at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.

In the past two years, the event has seen monumental success, generating more than $60,000 in combined revenue that resulted in the purchase of land for future homes and road improvements.

This year, the goal is a bit loftier: the humanitarian organization hopes patrons will help them reach their goal of raking in $57,000 in order to erect the first home on the property. The organization's overall goal is to build affordable housing for those in need.

'There is no way of knowing if we will achieve that goal or not,' said Susan Cooper, who sits on the gala's planning community. 'We didn't think we would last year, but we did.'

Part of Habitat's past success is derived from the event's bevy of offerings, which include Willamette Valley wine paired with appetizers. Live and silent auctions offer a wide array of items for bids, while the stage is lit up by returning favorite Bret Lucich, who takes listeners on a trip down memory lane by playing energetic renditions of classic rock songs.

Cooper said Lucich offers a perfect soundtrack for the evening by appealing to the music lover in everybody: much in the same way Habitat aims to appeal to the inner humanitarian in everybody. And if people can give back to the community while being entertained, Cooper says, everyone wins.

'We had thirtysomethings to elderly people there the last couple of years, and I'll tell you what, everybody likes (Lucich's) music, and everybody is up and dancing,' said Cooper. 'People have fun and support a good cause and have a very lively evening.'

The Hearts for Habitat gala takes place Friday, Feb. 11 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, 12930 Old Pumpkin Ridge Rd. in North Plains. Tickets are available at Columbia Community Bank, The Forest Grove United Church of Christ and The Friendly Vine. To learn more, call 992-8600.
