Girls age 12 to 15 invited to workshop at Pacific University

Local girls ages 12 to 15 are invited to the ninth annual Girls Today conference, a one-day seminar Oct. 11 whose focus is a discussion about the diverse issues important to young women’s futures and a well-rounded education.

Pacific University’s Center for Gender Equity and The American Association of University Women are the sponsors, and the event will be held at The Creamery, 2017 21st Ave., Forest Grove, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $5. To register, go to pacific.edu/cge.

The conference is designed to provide girls an opportunity to speak and be heard with the aid of trained facilitators. Public schools will not hold classes on Oct. 11 because of a statewide teacher-training day.

The summit will include an opening session, a forum about college, small group sessions on specific issues facilitated by students from Pacific’s School of Professional Psychology, a self-defense workshop, campus tour and a free Girls Today T-shirt for all participants.

From 8:45 to 9 a.m. in Old College Hall, 2043 College Way, there will be an optional parents meeting at which the coordinator of the psychology team will talk about the need for and benefits of conferences such as Girls Today and explain the events taking place during the day.
