2013 market season featured great food and fun

With 25 weeks under our belt this year we’ve seen much success at the Forest Grove Farmers Market, a program of the non-profit Adelante Mujeres. We welcomed new vendors, saw rising attendance, and continued participation in our Market Sprouts kids club as well as the SNAP Match Program. It is hard to pinpoint just one factor that has made the market a place we all want to gather every Wednesday evening.

We could attribute the success to the delicate spring greens and stalks of rhubarb that welcome us in May, or the first week of red, sweet strawberries that we’ve dreamt about all winter long. Perhaps it’s when the tomatoes finally ripen and you taste a fresh garbanzo bean for the first time. Maybe it’s the delicious hot foods, the irresistible baked goods, the local buffalo, the healing soaps, or the warming coffee. Or simply discovering a new flavor that you’ve never had the delight of knowing before the Forest Grove Farmers Market.

We could also thank our sponsors who financially supported market operations and programs; The City of Forest Grove, Tuality Healthcare, Aramark, New Seasons Market, Pacific University, H & R Block, US Bank, the United Church of Christ, Grendel’s Restaurant, the Forest Grove Leader and, let’s not forget, the Forest Grove News Times for running articles and advertising each NEWS-TIMES PHOTO: JOHN SCHRAG - Fresh vegetables brighten up the final Forest Grove Farmers Market of 2013 last Wednesday.

We could acknowledge the meteorologists for October sun. And what about the local businesses that allow us to set up shop and add to the diversity of products and services offered each Wednesday? Or the volunteers who set up tables, tents and chairs, wash dishes, pick up trash, and greet customers? And the musicians who serenade us?

Out of all the factors that make our market special, that create an atmosphere of coming together, we can’t forget the many people who frequent this community space. The children who run and tumble on the lawn of the UCC with berry-smeared faces, the adults who stop to chat and get the latest news, the students who meander through the market between study breaks, the firefighters who enjoy an evening meal, and everyone in between; an energy of connection, celebration, and support happens because of all the caring people who gather here. And so, although the veggies are what draw us to downtown Forest Grove each week, it is really the vibrant community that makes our market shine. Thanks for another fabulous season!
