Cornelius fire levy draws strong support

In a special Nov. 5 election, Washington County residents shot down several measures that called for tax hikes.

But more than 300 voters in the Cornelius Rural Fire District chose to renew a levy that expires next year. Almost 90 voted no.

The Cornelius Rural Fire District contracts with the city of Cornelius through the Cornelius Fire Department to provide services for those outside the city limits.

But the rural fire district’s permanent tax rate of about 62 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value doesn’t cover all of its costs.

The levy’s estimated tax rate is roughly 68 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value and will bring in $97,500 more per year, for a total of $487,500 during the next five years.

Combining the levy with the permanent tax rate, the total tax is about $1.30 per $1,000 of assessed value.
