Latina poets to read today

Students of the Adelante Mujeres Bridge Progam at Pacific University’s Center for Gender Equity (CGE) will read their poetry today, Dec. 4, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in Taylor-Meade Auditorium, 2032 Pacific Ave.

Adelante Mujeres is a Forest Grove nonprofit organization that provides academic and skills education for low-income Latina women in the Forest Grove and Cornelius areas. The CGE has partnered with Adelante Mujeres in offering a Spanish literature class on campus under the direction of Sascha Smith and Catie Prechtel. Community members are invited to the reading.

FGHS sets grad night bottle drive

Forest Grove High School students are holding a can and bottle drive to raise money for a safe grad night party. Drop off cans and bottles Dec. 7 and Feb. 8 in the high school parking lot, 1401 Nichols Lane, or give them to students going door to door in neighborhoods those days.

Wells Fargo offers college workshop

Wells Fargo has partnered with Univision to offer a free workshop in Hillsboro to provide college planning financial advice in Spanish to Hispanic students and parents.

The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Walters Cultural Arts Center, 527 E. Main St. The event will give attendees the opportunity to better understand the steps necessary to make the dream of going to college a reality.

Speakers at the workshop will guide attendees through a variety of best practices and tips to pay for college, which includes a careful look at how to find scholarships, financial aid, grants and loans. Attendees will also learn money management tips for high school and college students and parents, how to schedule college campus visits, and manage student loans.

Meeuwsen joins AmeriCorps

Jenny Meeuwsen of Forest Grove recently began a 10-month term of service in the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), an AmeriCorps program based in Sacramento, Calif.

Meeuwsen, the daughter of Jim and Donna Meeuwsen, will be part of a team helping with improvements at three state parks. She will receive $5,500 for college after she completes at least 1,700 hours of service in AmeriCorps.

“It seemed like a nice buffer between high school and college, and I wanted an adventure,” Jenny Meeuwsen said.
