Pacific professor wins Fulbright

Pacific University associate professor Nancy Neudauer has received a Fulbright Specialist Award to teach at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Cape Town, South Africa.

Neudauer will spend three weeks during December and January teaching matroids at the institute, a center for postgraduate study that promotes mathematics and science throughout the continent, recruits and trains talented students and teachers and advances initiatives in education, research and technology.

AIMS opened in 2003 as a partnership between three African and three European universities. It has received international acclaim for preparing African students for research and teaching careers in the mathematical sciences.

Reading, writing contest open

Letters About Literature, a national reading and writing contest sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, is inviting participation from students in grades 4-12. (The application dealine for grades 9-12 has already passed.)

Interested students are asked to write a personal letter to an author, explaining how the author’s work changed their view of the world or themselves.

Entries in each state will be assessed on content, use of language skills, style and originality of expression. Level I and Level II entries (grades 4-6 and 7-8) are due Jan. 10, 2014.

The three Oregon winners will receive $100 in cash, and runners-up and honorable mentions will receive cash prizes or gift certificates. State-level sponsors include the Oregon Center for the Book, Oregon Reading Association and the Oregon Library Association’s Oregon Association of School Libraries, Children’s Services Division and Young Adult Network.

Ed foundation offers ag scholarships

Applications are being accepted for Oregon Agricultural Education Foundation-sponsored scholarship programs for 2014-15.

Oregon Farm Bureau Memorial Scholarships, with 10 to 12 awards annually, are open to any Oregon high school graduate or current college student — with proper qualifying documentation — preparing for a n agriculture or forestry-related career.

Parent workshop coming to Joseph Gale
