Forest Grove resident watches as drama unfolds inside store

When Forest Grove resident Tim Orr was standing in line at the Forest Grove Safeway pharmacy last Thursday, he saw a cluster of employees chatting behind the counter.

Then two staff members grabbed the pharmacy’s cash boxes and took them away and another employee pulled down the roll-up barrier, saying they were suddenly closing.

“I didn’t know what was happening until I heard later,” Orr said. “The poor ladies looked upset.”

Orr eventually learned a man armed with a knife had robbed the pharmacy just after 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30.

The suspect — a white man in his 20s, about 6 feet tall with a thin build — approached the pharmacy counter with a knife and produced a handwritten note, according to Capt. Mike Herb, spokesman for the Forest Grove Police Department. The suspect fled the scene with an undisclosed number of oxycodone pills.

Tracking dogs were called in to assist but efforts to locate the suspect were unsuccessful.

The suspect was initially wearing a green coat, which was later recovered by police, and a grey hooded sweatshirt, light-colored blue jeans, brown boots, a black beanie and gloves.

The knife allegedly used by the suspect was recovered.

No one was injured in the incident and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Forest Grove Police at 503-992-3260 or after hours at 503-629-0111.
