Cancer fight joins St. Patrick's Day parade

As children, many of us remember playing with scraps of wood and cardboard to build forts and clubhouses — but retired mechanic Randy Ward of Hillsboro has taken those memories to a new level.

Ward has gathered scraps of wood and donated cardboard and transformed his Dodge Ram truck into a pirate ship, complete with a mast and cannons.

Randy and his wife Vickie are volunteers for the Hillsboro chapter of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. In keeping with the 2014 Hillsboro Relay theme — “Make Cancer Walk the Plank!” — Ward designed a pirate ship float for the annual Murphy’s St. Patrick’s Day parade through downtown Hillsboro. The parade starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15.

Ward completed much of the ship assembly at home, but when it was time for painting the float and adding finishing touches, he was joined by several other volunteers from Relay for Life of Hillsboro.

The Wards have known many people battling cancer, and they want to raise awareness about the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event and the many resources available.
