SUV strikes, kills man near Joseph Gale school

One man was killed and another injured Wednesday morning in a pedestrian-motor vehicle accident in Forest Grove's Old Town neighborhood.

According to Forest Grove Police Capt. Mike Herb:

"At 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, police and fire first responders were called to a reported auto-pedestrian crash on 18th Avenue in front of Joseph Gale Elementary School, across the street from Tuality Forest Grove Hospital.

Upon arrival, officers found two victims with hospital staff members and a citizen doing CPR on one victim. Lifeflight was activated for the most seriously injured victim, however canceled after medical personnel pronounced the individual deceased on scene. The second victim was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries by private vehicle.

Initial investigation reveals that the two subjects were hit by a sport utility vehicle traveling eastbound on 18th Avenue. The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with authorities. Investigators with Forest Grove Police along with members of the Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team are on scene and investigating this crash. Eighteenth Avenue will be closed at Maple Street for the next couple of hours."

Names are not being released at this time as authorities are attempting to locate the next of kin of the deceased, a man in his 40s. No students from the school were involved in this crash, Herb said.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
