Creek trail to face new round of concerns

Meeting set tonight in Forest Grove

Another group of worried property owners will attend tonight’s open house for the proposed Council Creek Regional Trail, a pedestrian/bicycle path that would connect Hillsboro to Cornelius, Forest Grove and Banks.

A previous open house June 4 solicited input on four proposed routes for the trail and drew mixed reactions from the roughly 60 people who attended. Many spoke favorably about the health, safety, environmental and economic benefits of such a trail, while several property owners near Cornelius worried about the possibility of negative effects if the trail came too close to their land.

Trail planners have since dropped some of the proposed routes and are ready to present the remaining alternatives. Some of the Cornelius contingent’s concerns have been addressed.

But a new group of about 10 property owners from the Forest Grove area met Friday after learning only recently of the proposed trail.

Katie Teufel-Hyneman, vice president of Oregon Roses, held the meeting at her home. Teufel-Hyneman said one of her neighbors saw a News-Times story about the open house and alerted her to the proposed trail, which looks like it would pass through her nursery property near Northwest Porter Road if an east-side alternative were selected for the route.

Teufel-Hyneman said she’d spoken with Derek Robbins, project manager for the Council Creek Regional Trail master-planning process, but was still not clear about where exactly the suggested trail route ran.

“The maps were confusing,” said Teufel-Hyneman, who also questioned whether all the appropriate stakeholders had been brought into the process.

An alternate route from Forest Grove to Banks would run to the west of the city along Northwest Kansas City Road.
