Local supporters plan DACA rally
Supporters of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program will be holding a Defend DACA rally this Thursday, Sept. 7, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the corner of Pacific Avenue and College Way (by OK Floral) in Forest Grove.
Supporters are invited to participate peacefully on the sidewalk.
"Bring signs, bring friends and family, bring kindness," wrote organizer (and Pacific University professor) Nancy Christoph in an email.
President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he would discontinue the program -- which was created by President Barack Obama in 2012 through an executive order -- in six months, giving Congress a chance to pass a law officially continuing the program.
DACA gives special protection to people from other countries (mostly from Mexico or Central America) who were brought to the United States illegally by their parents when they were minors.
The rationale is that as children, they had no say or responsibility for the illegal move and that some of them, particularly those who came as infants or toddlers, have known no other home or lifestyle than what they grew up with here in the U.S.
