Thanks for a great fireworks display

I was raised to always say "thank you" for any gift, large or small. This July 4th was truly a huge gift!

A heartfelt "thank you" to Dave Nemeyer, Forest Grove Fire & Rescue, Chris Sutton (Carpet MD) and all those who gave their time and efforts to making this holiday truly special.

I sincerely hope that all of Forest Grove will give serious consideration to continuing this spectacular celebration by donating funds to a worthy cause.

I have greatly missed the Fourth of July fireworks and last Wednesday night was a renewal of great excitement for me. Thank You, thank You, thank You.

Fourth of July was enjoyable for horses and humans

This year I enjoyed celebrating Independence Day by participating in the Hillsboro Happy Days Parade, having a barbeque with neighbors and making sure I was home for the evening fireworks.

Last year the two subdivisions adjacent to my farm erupted into a type of war zone. The use of illegal fireworks caused potential harm as they rained down in my horses’ pasture and seemed to go on most of the night. It was a truly unfortunate ending to a great celebration, but luckily my animals escaped injury and my adjacent wheat fields did not catch fire.

Planning for a similar repeat this year, I was most pleasantly surprised to witness only a limited number of illegal fireworks in the neighborhood.

Driving around, I noticed patrols by Forest Grove police and also Forest Grove firefighters. I also realize that thousands of people had congregated at Tom McCall school for the returned community fireworks.

I offer my thanks to the Forest Grove Firefighters Association, Chris Sutton and others who brought back this traditional family and community event.

I am not sure exactly which factors reduced the war zone climate, but I would suspect all contributed to a more enjoyable Independence Day evening for many, especially my frightened animals. Next year I may even be able to leave my animals and property and enjoy the fireworks in town. Thanks to all for making this a great Fourth of July.
