Did you know that Forest Grove has a long-range 20-year comprehensive plan as a guide for how the city grows? The plan tells a story about who we are as a community, what we want the future to look like and how we might get there.

The city is preparing the first update to the comprehensive plan since the mid-1980s. City staff, city councilors and planning commissioners need your help in updating the plan for the next two decades.

Please take a moment and look over the guide inserted inside this week’s News-Times about the plan update. The insert, prepared by the city’s Community Development department, provides an overview of possible alternatives for how Forest Grove might grow during the next 20 years. The alternatives provide a way to evaluate several different paths the city could take. For example:

n Should we as a community encourage large suburban-style residential lots?

n Or, should policy encourage a variety of housing options throughout the city such as townhouses, condominiums or apartments?

n Should we encourage more housing and businesses in downtown Forest Grove to promote activity during the day and throughout the evening?

n Would you like to be able to walk or drive to stores and offices closer to your home?

These are some of the questions we’d like your help answering. Please get involved and give us your thoughts about what you like or dislike about each alternative. A final proposal for adoption by the Forest Grove City Council will likely take elements from all or some of the alternatives based on a review of costs, benefits, possible impacts and your comments.

The city will be holding open houses and community forums as a way to exchange information. The first open house will be held in September. Additional information will be posted on the city’s website (, through the city’s utility billing mailings and in the News-Times.

The city’s planning staff is also available to meet with your neighborhood group or civic organization. To schedule a meeting please call us at 503-992-3226.

We all have a stake in our community. With your help we can create a city of lasting value.

Jon Holan is the community development

director for the City of Forest Grove.
