School board is hard, but rewarding, work

After five years serving on the Forest Grove School District board of directors, it is with definite mixed feelings that I have decided not to run for re-election in the upcoming May election.

I am completely and fully behind Dr. Yvonne Curtis and her team’s efforts on behalf of our students and I look forward to watching first hand, with my own four students, how the impact of their work unfolds.

This is a time of incredible transformation in public education (read as: overhaul of both the "how" and "why" in the approach to learning, teaching, engagement),  an incredible time of resource crisis and never a more critical time to get it right.

Our children face a very different future, for which every one of them will need a different kind of preparation than we did to become successful, fulfilled, contributing members of our economy and society.

The work in public education spans from visionary systemic transformation to making sure that every last student in the class understands the new math concept — every day!

We’ve all heard the phrase “re-designing the plane while it’s flying,” and that is exactly how I would describe what is happening in Forest Grove, in Oregon and across the nation, all amid constant turbulence.

It is exciting, frustrating, energizing, exhausting, challenging and fulfilling work that I have been priviledged to be a part of over the last five years.

I have decided not to run in the upcoming election so that I can focus more on my family (my first of four is graduating from FGHS next year),  but I hope to seek involvement again in the future.

In the meantime, I highly encourage you all to thoughtfully consider running for this open seat on the school board. As you can tell, I highly recommend the experience.

Our students and our future need you. The positions are now open to file for with the Washington County Elections Office, and the deadline to file is March 21. The filing requirement is $10 or a petition of 25 registered voter signatures. My open position is Position 3. If you have any questions as you consider this, please feel free to contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots.
