Support Farm to School bill
We are writing to express our strong support for the Farm to School Bill, HB 2038.
Oregon has been a national leader in Farm to School in recent years. This valuable, cost-effective and impactful program is a win-win for students, farmers, and the economy.
Thanks to the Oregon Farm to School program, our Adelante Mujeres Sustainable Agriculture program has provided produce grown on Latino-owned farms in Washington County to many local students. Farm to School allows us to prioritize selling to public schools to provide many low-income students with healthy, local produce, while at the same time ensuring that the farmers we work with are able to make a living wage.
Funding for the Farm to School Program has been eliminated in the Ways and Means Target Reduction Lists released in April. This is unacceptable! This valuable program supports Oregon's farms and food businesses, encourages healthy eating, and connects students with where their food comes from and how it is grown.
HB 2038 would maintain funding, in the form of grants administered by the Oregon Department of Education, to reimburse school districts for their purchase of Oregon-grown foods and for agriculture based activities.
We encourage you, our fellow community members, to contact your representatives in support of prioritizing and preserving funding for this important program. Join us to help make sure that Oregon continues to be a leader in Farm to School.
