Hillsboro to shred air-guitar world record

Latest stunt at center of Celebrate Hillsboro event is heavy... metal

If shredding air guitar alone in your room hasn’t yet lifted you to rock stardom, join thousands like you in the city of Hillsboro’s attempt to smash the Guinness World Record for the most people in a single concert to simultaneously play air guitar.

This Saturday, July 21, as part of the city’s eighth annual Celebrate Hillsboro family festival, the city will hand out free, custom-made guitar picks at the Tom Hughes Civic Center Plaza in downtown Hillsboro so people can make history by rocking out to the free world.

To beat the world record, the target turnout is 2,377 or more people.

Guinness World Record rules are no joke. An experienced air guitarist is required to lead the attempt and participants must perform three recognizable air guitar moves in 90 seconds.

Hillsboro has selected Cole Manson, aka “Johnny Utah,” current three-time Canadian Air Guitar Champion and two-time third place Champion of the World, to bring out the inner rock stars of all participating individuals.

The entrance queue to the world record attempt will start forming at 11:30 a.m., while the actual attempt will take place at noon.

Precise counting of participants is required. The city must present proof that the event took place, so video streaming and photography of all participants should be expected.

Celebrate Hillsboro is presented by Tuality Healthcare and offers more than just air guitar. The event includes live music, arts and crafts, healthy living and sustainability resources, a farmers' market and community information booths. A food drive is also a part of the event, so participants are encouraged to bring a can of food.
