Brewery-to-be offers samples and camaraderie

A new Forest Grove microbrewery will give a sneak preview of its beer at two upcoming events. Waltz Brewing will offer samples Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Urban Decanter, 2030 Main St., as part of the First Wednesday/Farmers Market event in downtown Forest Grove.

Saturday, Sept. 14, it will participate in a Brats 'n Homebrew Fest 2013 fundraising event at the Forest Grove Senior and Community Center, 2037 Douglas St. Tasters will pay a $5 entry fee.

“It’ll be homebrewers coming together,” said Waltz Brewing owner Adam Zumwalt of Forest Grove, who invites other homebrewers to show up and brew the day away, starting as early as 8 a.m.

“There’s actually a lot of us around town. It’s a big and diverse community,” Zumwalt said.

Zumwalt, 50, said he is about to take possession of a building at 1900 A St., where the microbrewery or “nanobrewery” will be based. He plans for a small brewery with a nice-sized tasting room that will feature tastings and samplings of Waltz beverages, as well as “guest taps.” He will also have thousands of vinyl records available

After he sets up his new space, Zumwalt will still have to wait a while to get federal licensing to sell beer, he said.

“We are truly homebrewers at this point and will be for several more months,” said Zumwalt, whose main income will continue to come from his roofing company job.
