Fantasy, history, romance on tap at Bards & Brews

Step into the Kingdoms of the Named Lands when Gresham author Ken Scholes reads from his book “Lamentation,” in downtown Hillsboro Friday for the monthly Bards & Brews series at Primrose & Tumblweeds, 248 E. Main St.

Sponsored by Jacobsen’s Books & More (located across the street from Primrose), the event gives each author 15 minutes to introduce themselves and read from their work while customers eat a meal or sip wine and microbrews.

First in the sci-fi/fantasy saga “The Psalms of Isaak,” Scholes’ book managed to snag a plug from sci-fi master Orson Scott Card—bestselling author of “Ender’s Game”—for its vivid characters and expert plotting. “Lamentation” is set so far in Earth’s future that our time is not even a memory.

Four other Portland-area authors will join Scholes, including Barbara Dan, whose historical romance invites readers to travel back in time. Her book, “The Outcast: The Long Road Back,” is a historical romance set in Oregon in 1913. When the black sheep son of a prominent New York banker lands in a small rural town in Oregon, he finds forgiveness, love and a new life.

Donald J. Sevetson will read from “Atkinson: Pioneer Oregon Educator,” a biography of Congregational missionary George H. Atkinson who arrived in Oregon the summer that Congress established the Oregon Territory, and for his leadership came to be known as “The Father of Public Education in Oregon.”

Two children’s authors, Lisa Ard of Bethany and Robert Tabb of Banks, round out the program. Ard will read from “Saving Halloween,” a spellbinding tale of outcasts who find acceptance and a girl who discovers the true meaning of family. Tabb will read from “The Glass Collectors,” which follows the misadventures of several fifth-graders, their story of growing up, and numerous poor decisions.

Readings begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25.
