TiTG opens auditions for The Hobbit

Theatre in the Grove will hold two nights of auditions this week for its upcoming production of “The Hobbit,” an adaptation for the stage of the classic children’s book by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The cast needed could be more than 26 actors or as few as 10. Auditions will be held in the theater’s Main Street Studio, 2011 Main St., Forest Grove on Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. Actors age “8 to 100-plus” are invited to audition.

“The best way to prepare for the auditions would be to study the characters in the book,” said production manager Jeanna Van Dyke. Auditions will be cold readings from the script by Patricia Gray. “There are smaller roles for those who would like to get their feet wet,” Van Dyke said, “but there is also the possibility of playing more than one role, which is always a great challenge for actors to show how versatile they can be.”

Many of the roles are for actors of smaller stature.

“There are many more ways one can volunteer to help on this production,” Van Dyke said, “including not only costumes and makeup, but also public relations, stage management, tickets, ushering, painting, backstage volunteers, etc. And in particular, because this is a production that will involve young actors as well as old, we want to encourage family involvement.”

Technical roles, including set, lighting and sound, are also available.

The show will be performed on two weekends, Jan. 17 to 19 and Jan. 24 to 26. Special daytime performances for schools are scheduled Jan. 21, 22 and 23. The production will be directed by Adam Borrego.
