Sculptors get chance to put art on display

by: COURTESY PHOTO: RICK PAULSON - Dancing Chairs, a pair of whimsical sculptures by North Plains artist James Schmidt, is the current installment, which will be moved to 53rd Avenue Community Park. Artists have the opportunity to display a sculpture across from the Hillsboro Civic Center for two years.

For the last several years, “Dancing Chairs” — a pair of whimsical sculptures by North Plains artist James Schmidt — has enlivened a small plaza at the intersection of Southeast Washington Street and Southeast Second Street.

Dancing Chairs will be moved to a permanent location at 53rd Avenue Community Park, opening up a spot for a new work of art downtown.

Artists may apply with up to six images of existing sculptures for free through CAFE at callforentry.org.

Artists can upload their images and apply for competitions worldwide.

The competition is open to artists from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana, and the deadline to apply is July 15.

The selected artist will receive a $3,000 honorarium for the sculpture, including installation and removal. The artwork may be for sale, and will be prominently featured on the city of Hillsboro’s “Cultural Arts” website.
