Scappoose pulls away from Banks in first half

Banks head football coach Ben Buchanan didn’t have much to say after Friday’s game against Scappoose.

After all, what can you say when your team gives up 47 points before halftime and goes on to drop its Cowapa League opener by a score of 54-29?

“We flat out did not show up in the first half against a very potent offense and they made us pay severely,” Buchanan said. “We couldn’t stop the run or the pass, and as a result we gave up 47 points in the first half.”

The Braves rallied to score three touchdowns in the second half, but the damage had already been done.

Scappoose finished the game with 568 yards of total offense. Quarterback Taylor Loss was 12-of-15 passing for 279 yards and five touchdowns, and running back Carson Davison had 162 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.

The loss dropped Banks to 2-3 on the season with a pivotal showdown coming up this week against an improved Seaside team. The Seagulls sit at 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play after going a combined 4-44 over the last five seasons.

“Obviously we need to regroup this week and get after a much improved Seaside squad,” Buchanan said. “It is our homecoming, so I know our boys will be fired up.”

Banks got an offensive boost last week with the return of running back Dakota Kemper, who was limited early in the season with an ankle injury and sat out the Braves’ non-league game against La Salle on Sept. 21. The senior rushed for 162 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Scappoose, sparking a Banks ground game that gained 230 yards and averaged nearly six yards per carry.

Banks quarterback Graysen Partain rushed for 57 yards and a pair of scores, and also completed 10-of-20 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown.

Zach Olson, Joey Bonin and Nolan Hill had three receptions apiece, with Bonin hauling in the lone touchdown, a 35-yard strike from Partain in the third quarter.

Banks will host Seaside on Friday at 7 p.m. for the centerpiece of the school’s homecoming weekend.
