Open house for sports complex
An open house to dedicate and celebrate the opening of Forest Grove High Schools new athletic complex which will be known as the Basinski Center is slated for next week.
The event will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23. A ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours of the facility and refreshments will be included in the festivities. The high school is located at 1401 Nichols Lane.
The Basinski Center consists of the schools new gym, weight room, locker rooms, concessions areas and commons foyer that were constructed with funds from a bond measure passed in 2010. The complex is named after former longtime Forest Grove educator, coach and athletic director Jeff Basinski, who retired in 2005 and died in 2011.

Sports on tap at Neil Armstrong
Fall sports are gearing up at schools around the area, including at Neil Armstrong Middle School in Forest Grove.
First up is a football conditioning camp, scheduled for 3-5 p.m. on Aug. 19-23 at the schools football field. The camp, which is free, is open to players in seventh and eighth grades. The first day of official practice is slated for Monday, Aug. 26, also from 3-5 p.m. Tryouts for the schools soccer and volleyball teams will begin after school on Monday, Sept. 9.
Fees for fall sports are $68 per student, $38 for students on reduced lunch, and $23 for students on free lunch.
Registration forms and sports physicals are required. Forms can be picked up at the middle school main office or downloaded from the school website.

Walters wins at Sunset Speedway
For the fifth year in a row, Banks Greg Walters captured the checkered flag in the Doug Walters Classic, a 67-lap feature named in honor of his late father, a driver and promoter for Sunset Speedway Park.
Racing in the Northwest Extreme Late Model Series on Aug. 3, Greg Walters overtook early leader Collen Winebarger on lap 26 and never looked back, racing to his fifth straight victory in the feature named for his father.
Other winners included Jerry Schram in the IMCA Modified race, Marc Farrar in Street Stocks, Travis Koch in the 4-Bees classification and Freya Smith in the Womens division.
