Four members of the Hillsboro Hops pitching staff have received call-ups to join the Arizona Diamondbacks Class A affiliate in South Bend.
Braden Shipley, Aaron Blair, Jimmie Sherfy and Daniel Gibson departed on a flight from Portland at 5:35 on Wednesday morning, a Hops personnel member confirmed.
In Shipley, the Silver Hawks are getting, the No. 15 overall pick in this years MLB draft. Out of Nevada and from North Medford, Shipley has gone 0-2 in eight appearances for the Hops. He gave up 30 hits and 18 runs in 19 innings while walking six and striking out 24. His earned run average was 7.58.
Blair, a Marshall product, also was a first-round draft pick this spring. The 6-foot-5 right-hander has gone 1-1 in decisions so far this year. In 31 innings over eight games, Blair has a 2.90 ERA. He has given up 25 hits, 10 runs and 13 walks compared with 28 strikeouts.
Gibson and Sherfy have been stars for the Hops out of the bullpen. Gibson was member of the South Division all-star team. A left-handed pitcher out of Florida, Gibson has made 14 appearances for the Hops this year, going 20 innings in all. Gibson has yielded just seven hits, five runs and eight walks while fanning 22, and he comes to the Silver Hawks with a miniscule 0.45 ERA.
Sherfy, who starred at Oregon, has yet to give up a run after pitching nine innings over nine games. The California native has been tough to hit -- giving up just three so far in his professional career. He also just has one walk and 17 strikeouts, averaging almost two per inning.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the Silver Hawks were 31-20 overall in the Midwest League, and they trailed the Great Lake Loons by just a half-game in the leagues Eastern Division. For more information, go to silverhawks.com.
