Local wrestlers shine at FGHS tournament
Banks brings home three championships at Bob Beisell Invitational
Banks may have been the only 4A team at last weekend's Bob Beisell Invitational tournament in Forest Grove, but the Braves wrestled well against the nine bigger schools, bringing home three championships.
Travis Thompson showed why he was ranked first at 145 pounds. 'He basically pinned his way to the finals and won 6-1 in his final match,' said Coach Dan Herb.
Colin Purrinton won the 106-pound bracket with a pin in his final match against Century High's Brennan Baccay. Bubba Brown, who was ranked #2 at 220-pounds, squeezed out an overtime win in the semi-finals before pinning Jeremy Sullivan of Forest Grove in the finals.
In addition to Sullivan, the Vikings had several other standout performances. Kyle Vanderkin dominated the 170-pound bracket, taking the championship with three consecutive pins. Teammate Jake Bennett followed the same path to his championship at 182-pounds and Joe Rodriguez finished second at 113 pounds.
Next up for the Braves is a league dual meet against Scappoose on Thursday at Yamhill-Carlton.
The Vikings, meanwhile, host conference rival Century on Thursday.
