Fans put their Super Bowl picks on the line

It may not be the Ducks vs. Beavers, but there's still plenty of interest in Super Bowl XLVI.

Since you're reading the sports section, you probably know that a week from Sunday a couple football teams will meet in Indianapolis. It may not be the Ducks vs. Beavers, but there's still plenty of interest in Super Bowl XLVI. So we recruited five local NFL fans (two coaches and three armchair quarterbacks) to make their predictions. Next week, we'll report on who came closest to picking the score.

Jeffrey Kirk Johnson

Music instructor,

Gaston School District

Patriots: 24 - 17

and #9632; Childhood loyalty: Pittsburgh Steelers 'because my brother and father rooted for them on TV.'

and #9632; This year rooted for: The Indianapolis Colts; 'I have followed Peyton Manning since his days as a Tennessee Volunteer.'

and #9632; On Super Bowl Sunday he'll be at home with good friends; wife, Jennifer; and 11-month-old daughter, Jillian.

and #9632; Why the Pats will win: Tom Brady is most likely fuming after his last debacle on the field. He also remembers the 2008 loss, and won't disappoint his team this time. Coach Bill Belichick is a preparation machine.

Monica Christopherson

Athletic secretary,

Forest Grove High School

Giants: 31 - 27

and #9632; Childhood loyalty: Childhood loyalty: San Francisco 49ers. 'I was a big Joe Montana fan.'

and #9632; This year rooted for: The Chicago Bears. 'I joined my husband in rooting for the Bears since the days of Walter Payton. I enjoy watching Brian Urlacher play and the whole Bears organization in general.'

and #9632; On Super Bowl Sunday she'll be at her son Chad's house in Forest Grove (he's a Giants fan) with lots of family, friends and good food.

and #9632; Why the Giants will win: 'Although Tom Brady is an outstanding quarterback, I think Eli Manning is playing really great right now and the combined play of Manning and Cruz will put the Vince Lombardi trophy in their hands.'

Jeannine Murrell

Farmers Insurance,

Cornelius

Giants: 24 - 21

and #9632; Childhood loyalty: 'My Dad was a 49ers fan and I've been a 49ers fan since the 4th grade when I would bet lunch money on the games with schoolmates.'

and #9632; This year rooted for: '49ers. I've waited a decade for the ole magic of the team to shine through. I'm thinking right now we have that with Coach Harbaugh. Alex Smith has some of the skills that we have been missing since the days of Joe Montana and Steve Young.'

and #9632; On Super Bowl Sunday 'I'll be at the Keller watching 'Madame Butterfly.' I would have exchanged my opera tickets if the 49ers had made it. Now, I'll DVR the game.'

and #9632; Why the Giants will win: 'I can't stand Eli Manning, so it's hard to pick the Giants, yet since this is a New England Bowl game the Giants look stronger to win. They are pretty even in ability, but I give the edge to Manning.'

Ben Buchanan

Football coach,

Banks High School

Giants: 27 - 24

and #9632; Childhood loyalty: 'Although I didn't have fanatical ties to any NFL team, I was partial to the Rams because of their cool uniforms.'

and #9632; This year rooted for: 'I always root for the Seahawks since they are local but also for the Lions since they have been down for so long and they have Ndamukong Suh.'

and #9632; On Super Bowl Sunday

'I'll be either at my house or my brothers'.'

and #9632; Why the Giants will win: 'The defensive line is going to put a lot of pressure on Brady, who isn't extremely mobile. Their pass rush will force several uncharacteristic mistakes by Brady that Manning and his big play receivers will capitalize on. If the Giants can run the ball effectively, they will be able to use play-action really well.'

Keith Buckley

Head football coach,

Pacific University

Patriots 30 - 27

and #9632; Childhood loyalty:

The 49ers. 'I grew up in the Bay Area during the Bill Walsh/ Joe Montana era.'

and #9632; This year rooted for: The Boxers. 'It's the only football team I think about.'

and #9632; On Super Bowl Sunday he'll be with friends and family ('and some great tailgate-type food!')

and #9632; Why the Pats will win: 'My wife Kara is childhood friends with Tom Brady's sister, so I can't root for anyone else. Also, it's very hard to beat someone twice in a season, Brady is very motivated and Coach Bill Belichick is a gameplanning mastermind.'
