Banks wrestlers begin the state qualification process with a bang at the district tourney
Banks followed up its strong regular-season performance with an equally strong showing at the Cowapa League district wrestling tournament last weekend, crowning two district champions and qualifying a total of 10 wrestlers for the upcoming regional tournament.
Banks swept the league's postseason awards, with Travis Thompson earning Outstanding Lightweight Wrestler honors after winning a district title at 145 pounds, and Bubba Brown was named Outstanding Heavyweight Wrestler after storming to a district championship at 195.
Both wrestlers will be heavy favorites this weekend at the Special District 1 regional tournament, which will be held at North Marion High School.
'The boys wrestled pretty tough and put themselves in good position to qualify for state at the regional tournament this weekend,' Banks head coach Dan Herb said.
Eight other Banks wrestlers qualified for regionals by finishing fourth or better at the district tournament last weekend.
Collin Purinton finished second at 106 pounds, losing his bid for a district title to Scappoose freshman Cody Jackson. Justin Purinton wrestled his way to third place at 120 pounds, while Dylan Bigsby finished third at 195, Kyle Douglas took third at 220 and Jeremy Schillereff finished third at 160.
Banks had three other regional qualifiers, which gave the Braves 238½ team points, good for third place overall. Tillamook won the district tournament with 446 points.
Cole Hendren finished fourth for Banks at 113 pounds, Adam Ezell was fourth at 145 and Clay Kemper took fourth at 160.
