Lady Vikings earn state playoff bid
Forest Groves fifth-place finish in the Pacific Conference standings earned the Lady Vikings a home match in the play-in round of the Class 6A state volleyball playoffs on Saturdaiy, and they turned that into a three-set sweep of Crater.
Forest Grove (10-11, 6-8) wrapped up the regular season with a loss to Tigard last Tuesday, then tuned up for the postseason with a gritty five-set victory on the road against Aloha on Thursday. The Vikings dropped the second and third sets of that match, but battled back for a 27-25, 19-25, 18-25, 25-16, 15-9 victory.
The confidence from that win carried over into Saturdays match, with Forest Grove surging to a big early lead and never looking back in a 25-9, 25-20, 25-16 victory that secured a spot in the 32-team state playoff bracket.
The Lady Vikings were scheduled to travel to third-ranked Roseburg (23-3) on Wednesday. Results were not available at press time, but the winner advances to the second round to face either Glencoe or Southridge.
Banks XC season comes to an end

Vikings will host play-in game
The Forest Grove football team dropped its regular-season finale against Tigard last Friday, but the Vikings 29th-place position in the OSAA power rankings earned the team a home game this week for the Class 6A play-in round.
Forest Grove (4-5) will host Crater (2-7) on Friday at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the first round of the state playoffs, which begin on Nov. 8.
