Lady Viks split with Glencoe, Century
With the playoffs looming, Forest Grove picks up a win against Century
With one regular season game remaining, the Forest Grove girls basketball team is all but assured of a sixth-place finish in the Pacific Conference, but that doesn't mean the Lady Viks will go down without a fight.
Forest Grove posted a scrappy 40-32 win over Century last Friday night, and the Lady Viks closed out the regular season on Tuesday with a game against struggling Hillsboro, so head coach Dan Lumpkin is hoping to build a little late-season momentum as his team prepares for a Class 6A play-in game next weekend.
The Lady Vikings will play the No. 4 seed from the Metro League - currently a four-way battle between Jesuit, Beaverton, Westview and Southridge - with a shot at qualifying for the Class 6A state playoffs, which begin on Feb. 28.
If the Lady Viks want to make a run at the postseason, these last few regular-season games will be critical.
Last Friday, Forest Grove (11-12, 4-9) went on the road against Century and spoiled the Jaguars' Senior Night, leading wire-to-wire in a 40-32 victory. The Lady Vikings built a three-point halftime lead, then stretched it to eight in the third quarter with full-court defensive pressure.
'The game stayed close from beginning to end,' Lumpkin said. 'In the first half we missed several scoring opportunities right at the hoop. We had several great looks by all of our players, we just could not score. Century also helped themselves by having 10 offensive rebounds in the first half to give them second chance scoring opportunities.'
Jessica Ortman led Forest Grove offensively with 14 points, and Abby Jensen had a team-high seven rebounds. Hannah Swanson, who missed a week with an ankle injury, returned to the floor and contributed nine points, five steals, three assists and two rebounds.
Ortman also had a 14-point effort earlier in the week in a 57-32 loss to league-leading Glencoe.
Forest Grove traveled to Hillsboro on Tuesday for both teams' regular-season finale, but results were not available at press time.
