Cowapa League releases its annual list Of boys and girls basketball all-star teams

A total of eight players and coaches from the Banks boys and girls basketball teams were honored at the conclusion of the winter sports season by being named to their respective Cowapa League all-star teams.

For the the Banks girls, four players received recognition by being named either to the all-league team or as honorable mention selections, while coach Brandon Begley was voted co-coach of the year.

Amy Hilger ended her high school career as an all-league pick and was named the league’s defensive player of the year. The 5-foot-8 wing averaged 7.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and an impressive 4.7 steals per game to help Banks to a repeat state playoff appearance. She also shot 39.9 percent from the field.

Megan Bunn joined Hilger on the 12-player all-league team. With 10.4 points per game, the 6-0 sophomore post was the only Banks player to average double figures in scoring. She also recorded 7.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 2.3 steals per contest while shooting 45.2 percent from the field.

Another senior and a sophomore, Lauren Birr and Ariel Slifka, were honorable mention all-league selections.

Birr, a 5-8 guard and a team captain along with Bunn and Hilger, averaged 5.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

Slifka really started to hit her stride in her sophomore season. The 5-9 wing/post shot a team-best 57 percent from the field and posted averages of 8.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Begley picked up his coaching honors in his first year at the helm of the girls program. He steered a team that had lost five starters from the previous season to a second-place finish in the league standings, a 17-8 overall record and to the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

Wally Hamer, who coached Seaside to the league championship, shared the coach of the year award with Begley. Seagulls guards Maddi Utti and Kaitlin Lewis were voted co-most valuable player.

For the Banks boys, Garrett Markham, a 6-foot-2 senior forward and a team captain, was named to the 12-player all-league team.

Markham, who averaged nearly a double-double this season with 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, helped a much improved Banks squad post a 9-13 overall record and finish fifth in a highly competitive Cowapa League. Five of the Braves’ losses in league play this winter came by seven points or fewer.

Senior Aaron Streblow, a hard-working forward who averaged 4.8 points and 2.0 steals per game, and junior guard Devyn Renne, who scored 7.6 points per game and led the Braves in 3-point shooting percentage, were honorable mention selections for Banks.

Tillamook senior guard Joey Hancock picked up most valuable player honors, while Yamhill-Carlton’s Jon Clark was named defensive player of the year. Tillamook’s Greg Werner was voted coach of the year.
