Hagg Lake hosts off-road events
A full weekend of racing ended Sunday at Xterra PDX Epic Off Road Weekend, staged at Hagg Lake.
Events included off-road triathlons, a duathlon, a half marathon, plus 10-kilometer and 5K running races. The Scoggins Valley Scramble mountain bike race also took place on area trails.
Area pros Jeff Smith, 33, and Christopher Bagg, 35, were the only two participants in the elite/pro division of the full triathlon, which consisted of a 1,000-meter swim, 25K bike leg and 8K run. Smith finished in 1 hour, 59 minutes, 38 seconds, while Bagg was timed in 2:01:28.
Nate Youngs, 34, was the top amateur finisher in 2:04:31. He was followed by Matt Berg, 42, in 2:07:40 and Mathieu Signoretty, 25, in 2:08:13. Susan Moote, 51, was the womens winner in 2:46:27. Patty Smaldone, 47, was second in 2:47:06. Zayda Maguire, 28, took third in 2:57:52.
Keith Ochoa, 38, topped the sprint triathlon (500-meter swim, 21K bike, 5K run) field in 1:45:40. Jeremy Kennedy took second in 1:49:28, and Kimberly McCormack, 31, was third overall and the first female finisher in 1:57:07. Forest Grove swim coach Tabor Waterstreet was third among men and fourth overall in 2:01:29.
Ben McCormack, 35, and Karen Neibauer, 41, were the duathlon winners in 2:03:14 and 2:55:09, respectively. The duathlon was made up of a 21K bike leg and 8K run.
In the half marathon, Thomas Taylor, 39, prevailed in 1:32:24, while former UO cross-country All-American Carrie Zografos, 35, was third overall and the first woman in 1:51:16.
Jonathan Muirhead, 35, topped a field of 192 in the 10K in 44:41, while Lauren Thomson, 25, finished in 49:07 as the fastest woman. Richard Fetting, 19, took the 5K race in 18:46, and Nikki Smith, 35, won the womens title in 22:02.
Softball tourney set for this month
The inaugural Battle in the Grove coed softball tournament is slated for Aug. 23-24 at Thatcher Park in Forest Grove.
This is a one-pitch tournament, meaning batters have one pitch per at-bat on which to hit, walk or strike out. The tournament will consist of one eight-team A bracket and an eight-team B bracket. All teams are guaranteed at least three games. Each team will play two seed games to be played on the first day. A single elimination format will be utilized on the second day.
Preregistration forms are due by Sunday. All team fees and completed roster sheets need to be turned in by 10 a.m. that day at Thatcher Park. Registration fee is $220 per team. Teams must consist of at least eight players (four women and four men).
Womens running event returns
The Happy Girls Run Forest Grove is back at Hagg Lake for a second consecutive year on Saturday, Sept. 6. This womens running event includes off-road half marathon, 10-kilometer and 5K races along lakeside trails and paths.
Registration fee is $85 for the half marathon, $45 for the 10K and $35 for the 5K, and includes goody bags, Happy Girl active wear and post-race refreshments.
The beneficiaries for this years event are the domestic violence agency Raphael House of Portland and the organization Girls Inc., which provides empowering programs for girls.
